Who is Kyocera? This Is What You Need To Know
Kyocera (pronounced kyow·seh·ruh) was founded in 1934 in the city of Kyoto, Japan. The company was initially named Kyoto Ceramic Company, Limited because they first began making ceramic insulators for television picture tubes. Fast forward to now, the name Kyocera comes from a combination of these two words: Kyoto and Ceramics. See, you learn something new every day!
Since the beginning, Kyocera has been an expert in working with and manufacturing products with ceramics. They manufacture everything from industrial ceramics, telecommunications equipment, electronic components, semiconductor packages, components for medical and dental implants—and of course, copiers and printers.
Kyocera even makes consumer cooking items from ceramics like pots, pans and many cutting devices like complete sets of knives. By the way, if you’re into cooking like I am, I highly recommend getting your hands on the ceramic knives by Kyocera—they are life-changing!
Kyocera Acquisitions and Partnerships
Over the years, Kyocera has acquired many different manufacturing companies like Yashica, KLH, Cybernet Electronics Corporation, Mita, AVX Corporation, Sanyo Mobile, and so much more. These acquisitions complemented and aligned with their core business processes and innovations and allowed them to enter new, uncharted markets.
Speaking of, Kyocera entered the printer business in 2000 with the acquisition of Mita Industrial Company, later becoming Kyocera Document Solutions.
Kyocera Influence in North America
Today, Kyocera Group is a multinational manufacturer of ceramics, electronics, and office technology and employs nearly 77,000 team members worldwide.
As a side note, we occasionally get questions about Kyocera not being an American-owned or operated organization. Like I just mentioned, it’s a multinational manufacturer with employees worldwide—including right here in the U.S.A. There actually isn’t such a thing as American-made products in regards to the top brands of copiers and printers. For example, Xerox products are made outside of the U.S. in Fiji.
Kyocera's North American operations have contributed enormously to the company's overall success. They established their first North American sales company in 1969. It began as a two-person operation serving Silicon Valley's expanding semiconductor industry and other high-tech markets throughout the United States.
Since then, their North American operations have extended to more than 4,000 employees engaged in the manufacture and sale of a broad range of state-of-the-art, high-technology products for consumers and businesses alike.
Kyocera Awards and Recognition
The exceptional performance of Kyocera's products has been highly praised by noted industry analysts and certification authorities globally. This is reflected in the numerous awards they’ve received, such as the BLI Award, Good Design Award, and if Design Award. You can learn more about them here.
Kyocera continues developing reliable devices that promise high-quality, not only in performance but also in design and usability. This high level of evolution contributes to building office environments where users can efficiently manage their document workflows.
Kyocera Products: Are They Really That Good?
Like most top brands, Kyocera manufactures a broad range of laser and inkjet copiers and multifunction printers (MFPs), including copying, scanning, printing, and faxing. Overall, their products hold a reputation for being extremely reliable, easy-to-use, and capable of producing high-quality prints in large volumes.

When it comes to operating costs, Kyocera products have a novel advantage over the rest. Because of their ceramics expertise, Kyocera manufactures its printing devices with ceramic drums, using less energy and heat. Not to mention, ceramic particles are added to the toner to clean the copier drums while they’re working.
So what does this mean for you as the end-user? It means that Kyocera devices require less servicing and have lower operating costs than many other brands. I don’t know about you, but continuous reliability and cost-saving opportunities are a high priority on my list.
While we’re on the subject, I want to mention one of Kyocera’s environmentally friendly product lines. The Kyocera ECOSYS line of printers is created to reduce environmental impact and minimize running costs.
These products are built to use as few consumables as possible. Like I just stated, this means less maintenance, lower operating costs, and easier recycling of used components. Speaking of the environment, the organization is also recognized for its climate change initiatives.
